As with most things, there is plenty of great ice cream to be found in New York City, including places specializing in exotic flavors, like my favorite, the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. But transplants from Columbus, and perhaps Chagrin Falls, no doubt still miss the artisanal flavors of Jeni’s Splendid. Fortunately, the ice cream enterprise that Jeni Britton Bauer began in 2002 as a stand in Columbus’ North Market has been making inroads nationally; Jeni has published a cookbook and now has shops in Tennessee. While it is possible to order any of Jeni’s flavors online, it is going to cost you $58 for a minimum order of four pints plus shipping. Fortunately, for New Yorkers needing a Salty Caramel or Queen City Cayenne fix, there are cheaper options available locally. In Manhattan, Dean & Deluca sells pints for $11 at their locations in Soho and on the Upper East Side, while Grace’s Marketplace sells them for $12.99. In Brooklyn, Greene Grape Provisions in Fort Greene has pints for $10.99 (as well as a great selection of cheeses), as does Brooklyn Fare, which is also one of the few places you can get Marky Ramone’s pasta sauce. In DUMBO, Forager’s has an extensive selection of flavors, including the new Whiskey and Pecans, at $11.49 a pint. Sure, paying around $12 for a pint of ice cream is pretty pricey, but then our rents are twice as much too.
