Record nerds of NYC unite! This weekend is the annual WFMU Record Fair. Held each year to benefit the listener-supported, non-commercial station (and really about the only worth listening to on the New York FM dial), this event attracts record dealers from around the country. But it’s more than just cratedigging, with bands, films, deejays and Q&As with notable music types, as well as pizza and beer. In fact, I hope you are there already reading this on your smartphone because in about five minutes Prince Rama will be taking the stage. It all goes down at Metropolitan Pavilion at 125 W. 18th Street, today and tomorrow from 10am to 7pm. Admission is $7, but you can usually find an ad in The Village Voice for a couple bucks off.
Anyway, anyone who has spent any time shopping for records will recognize a familiar face if they stop by booth D12, where Ron House will be selling his wares. In addition to collectibles, he’ll most likely be hawking Northren Psych, the debut album from his new band, Psandwich, on Columbus Discount Records. The above sketch of Ron was used as part of the cover for the album and was done by his bandmate Bobby Silver, who I hope doesn’t mind me borrowing it.
